Professional experience : I am research fellow at the University of Pretoria, where I lead the Plant Virology Group at the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI). My PhD focussed on the application of next-generation sequencing to plant virus ecology. Since then, I have broadened my expertise across agricultural systems, working with a wide range of plant viruses. I have developed strong technical capabilities—including metaviromics and bioinformatics—which underpin my research into viral diversity, epidemiology, and host–virus interactions. My work has contributed widely to understanding viral pathogens of major crops, primarily grain and oilseeds, resulting in numerous first reports, novel virus descriptions, and methodological advances. I currently hold an NRF Y-rating and have successfully secured competitive national and industry-linked grants supporting research on plant viruses and their pathosystems. I am an active supervisor and mentor, having supervised several MSc candidates and multiple ongoing postgraduate students. I have presented my research internationally and locally, published extensively in ISI-rated journals, and contributed to diagnostic capability development through both research and applied projects. My overarching goal is to expand knowledge of the African plant virome and strengthen surveillance, diagnostics, and management strategies for virus-associated crop disease.
